Doctor Who Top 10: fans vote for all-time best episode

Doctor Who fans have named a 1984 episode starring Peter Davison as their all-time favourite in a top 10 of the sci-fi show's best storylines.

More than 6,700 fans responded to the poll by the official Doctor Who magazine, carried out to mark the 200th episode of the show which began back in 1963. They were asked to rate all 200 episodes by giving them a mark out of 10.
There were four entries in the list from the more recent series starring Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, while the remainder of the top 10 was comprised of episodes from the 70s and 80s.

The winner was The Caves of Androzani, which was the epic final story for the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison.

Doctor Who and his companion Peri arrive on the planet Androzani Minyr, and are soon entangled in a dark plot involving gun-running, drug-smuggling, and android duplicates. At the climax of the story, dying from poison, the Doctor has to regenerate to save his own life, but saves the life of Peri in the process.

The 1984 episode narrowly beat the recent episode, Blink, starring David Tennant. The 2007 episode attracted 6.1 million viewers on the BBC.
Speaking to the Doctor Who Magazine about his victory, Davison said: “I think you immediately knew when you read the script, that it was a very good Doctor Who story. It was a Bob Holmes script, and he was one of the writers that you dreamed of having on Doctor Who.”
Graeme Harper directed the episode. Davison added: “Graeme’s philosophy was that it needed pace and it needed energy. Graeme’s input, and the fact that it was a great script, really lifted it, I think”.

The full results of the poll can be found in the Doctor Who Magazine #413.
