Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant & Matt Smith - The Doctor on TV

The Doctor takes on leading roles in major new dramas this autumn.

Christopher Eccleston - will play a troubled plumber in Jimmy McGovern's six part BBC1 drama Accused.

David Tennant - plays a widowed dad in Single Father on BBC1.

Matt Smith - plays a gay author in BBC2's 1930s set biopic Christopher and His Kind.

Suranne Jones has described David Tennant as "humble" and "charismatic".

Jones stars alongside Tennant in new drama Single Father and explained that she loved working with him.

"Obviously Doctor Who was massive so I was really excited about meeting David," she told the Radio Times. "He's the funniest, most charismatic, intelligent, humble actor."

Jones also revealed details of the show, saying: "[Tennant] plays Dave, recently widowed and struggling to bring up his children, while I play his widow's best friend. We're brought together by grief, and emotions get complicated.

"What I love about the drama is that it asks: how would you react in that situation? It's wonderfully grown-up and it feels authentic."

Single Father is expected to air on BBC One in October.*

Starstruck pupils disrupt BBC film (David Tennant)

Producers of a new drama starring David Tennant had to re-shoot scenes several times after children at a Glasgow school ignored orders not to look at him.

Producers told about 90 pupils at Jordanhill Primary School in the west end of the city not to stare or wave at the former Doctor Who star as he performed scenes for Single Father, in which he plays a man left to bring up four children alone.

In the scene, Tennant, 39, in his first major role since leaving the science fiction show, had to run from a car parked outside the gates as the real pupils emerged from the school.

One parent said: “They just couldn’t help it. They were all sneaking side glances at him and some had their hands tight to their bodies waving at him thinking the camera couldn’t see that. It took forever to do, they had to do it over and over again.”

A BBC spokeswoman said: “The Single Father cast and crew thoroughly enjoyed their time filming at Jordanhill Primary School. Our young extras proved enthusiastic and took well to directions about being in shot, how to act and why waving during filming is a TV no no.”
